QUESTOIN: How do the document limits work on the free version? Is that the limit you can use/ have active at one time?

Our documents refer to how many new documents you can open and/or create within Donna in a single billing month. The free tier is capped at 50 unique documents. If you hit that at the end of a cycle, for the next cycle you can still open those 50 and 50 additional documents as well. Hope that clarifies things!
