A new toolbar, and a lot fewer "Soon" buttons 🧰
This release is mostly about the toolbar: a new layout, and a long list of buttons that finally do something.
A new toolbar 🧰
The toolbar has been rebuilt around a fixed set of tabs — Home, Insert, Layout, References, Review, View and Tools — sitting in the title bar for every file type. No more floating, detaching or dragging the ribbon around.
-
Search commands. Can't remember which tab something lives under? Press ⌘/ (Ctrl+/) or click the glyph at the end of the pill, type what you want, and Donna takes you to it.
-
Lists or Panels. Tools › Toolbar › Customize toolbar… lets you choose whether tabs open as Word-style panels or as plain lists. Panels is the default, and your choice is remembered.
-
Table Design, Table Layout and Picture tabs appear when you're working in a table or on an image.
-
Commands Donna can't do yet are greyed with a Soon tag, so you can see what's coming rather than guessing.
Buttons that used to say "Soon" 🔨
-
Paragraph, Tab stops, Borders and shading, and Multilevel list dialogs all work now. They only change the settings you actually fill in, so applying one no longer wipes formatting you left alone.
-
Clear formatting strips bold, colour, font and other character formatting from the selected text.
-
Accept and Reject now work on the single tracked change your cursor is in, not just all of them at once.
-
Previous change / Next change jump to the tracked change before or after your cursor and scroll it into view, wrapping round at the ends the way Word does.
-
Show markup switches between All markup, No markup and Original. It only changes what you see — nothing is accepted or rejected.
35 fonts, and they survive export ✍️
Fifteen more Word fonts are available in the document and spreadsheet font menus. Each one previews in its own typeface, and the list scrolls once it gets long. Exporting a Word document to PDF uses the same fonts, so the PDF looks like what you were editing.
Spreadsheets
-
Formatting shortcuts — bold, italic and the rest — now work in spreadsheets, with shortcut hints that match your platform.
-
Changing the font on a selection no longer copies the first cell's font over everything else you'd selected.
PDFs
-
PDFs now open at 90% zoom, so a full page fits on screen without reaching for the zoom control.
-
The PDF toolbar has been rebuilt on the same ribbon as everything else.
Also fixed 🐛
-
Windows: the Menu button in the title bar now opens File, Window and Help again — Save and the rest had gone missing with the hidden title bar.
-
Floating tabs no longer sit on top of your PDF or Word content.
-
Returning to a workspace that has websites in it now keeps you on the tab you were on.
-
Edits made from the toolbar are now included when a Word document or spreadsheet is saved.
